The Rhode Island School of Design desk refit replaced all desks in the department of Architecture and Landscape Architecture with a unitary desk that provided a drawing surface, a butcherblock making surface, a vice, and storage. The emphasis on making and drawing reinforced RISD’s core curriculum at a time when studio cultures were shifting to digital design (early 2000’s). These elements were delivered for less cost than a standard drafting table by adding custom elements to existing manufactured furniture systems. The desks remain in service after 20 years. Retirements of some desks are being initiated due to the desire to use smaller workspaces.
