Peter Stempel is an artist, social scientist, and educator who works closely with oceanographers and ocean engineers. His research integrates peoples’ concerns about extreme weather with storm simulations to create real-time impact forecasting tools for emergency management and to create visualizations used for hazard and risk communication. Visualizations are tested in coastal communities to better understand how to support emergency management and planning and work with nature to reduce risks. His work has been funded by the US Department of Homeland Security and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and has benefited the US Coast Guard, The US Navy, The US Fish and Wildlife Service, and the US National Park Service in addition to State and local governments.
In his role as associate professor of landscape architecture with a focus on water related resilience at Penn State University he is training artists and designers to collaborate more effectively with scientists, policymakers, and stakeholders to address complex societal issues arising from natural hazards.
